In all our English lessons, students work in small teaching groups to enable us to get to know them as individuals and build on their strengths and interests. We focus on the core skills that help us all to communicate: reading, writing, speaking and listening. To enable students to reach their full potential, we enable them to form life skills that will help them in their future. Be that applying for a job or gaining formal qualifications to access college and further education.
In Years 6 to 9 we build the skills identified in the National Curriculum. In Year 9 all students begin a program in aiming to complete a Functional Skills qualification. In years 10 and 11 we aim to enter students for the higher Functional Skills Level 1 and 2 qualifications which are equivalent to GCSE and/or GCSE, whichever are most appropriate to each student’s needs. Students also take part in ‘The Accelerated Reading Scheme’. This encourages students to read regularly both during daily reading sessions and during their own time.
